Drayage is a short truck move connecting a port or rail ramp to a warehouse, yard or customer. Import and export moves involve different handoffs, but both require timing and accurate release information.
The move between modes
A loaded import may travel from a marine terminal to a distribution center; an empty can return to a designated location. Destinations and distances vary. No arbitrary mileage limit defines every drayage move.
Before terminal pickup
Check the container number, release and availability, appointment rules where required, chassis arrangement and the terminal's last free day. Driver access requirements vary. At secure maritime facilities, confirm any required TWIC; do not assume the same requirement applies at every rail or warehouse gate.
Know which clock is running
Terminal storage or demurrage, equipment detention and chassis charges are distinct. Verify terms, free time and dates in the applicable tariff or agreement. A short distance does not guarantee a low total cost.
At delivery and return
Confirm the consignee appointment and warehouse readiness, document receipt condition, and follow the equipment provider's return instructions. Assign an owner for release, pickup, delivery and return exceptions.
